Laplace expansion, also known as Laplace's expansion or the cofactor expansion, is a method used to compute the determinant of a square matrix. This technique expresses the determinant of a matrix in terms of the determinants of smaller matrices, called minors, which are obtained by removing a specific row and column from the original matrix. The Laplace expansion can be performed along any row or column of the matrix.
