Friedrich Bessel (1784-1846) was a German mathematician, astronomer, and one of the founders of the field of astrometry, which is the measurement of stellar positions and movements. He is best known for his work on the measurement of stellar parallax, which allowed the determination of the distances to stars, fundamentally advancing our understanding of the scale of the universe.
