"Baryton" is a string instrument used in the 18th century, closely related to the viola but distinct in that it has a series of additional strings that are played by a technique similar to that of a double bass. It often features a rich, deep sound. The baryton is particularly notable because it was favored by composers such as Joseph Haydn, who wrote a number of works for it, including sonatas.
